It’s no secret that corn is one of the foods at the top of the GMO chain. One of the foods I consume that has genetically modified materials can be found in corn tortilla chips, specifically “Mission Tortilla Chips”. Mission corn tortilla chips and other corn products claim to be “all natural”, made with 100% whole grain corn (Mission food service website). Now, it isn’t incorrect to say this, since technically the corn is 100% whole grain that goes into the chips. However, what is done to this corn prior to becoming chips is the real story.

A study done on genetically modified organic corn products compared various corn products from different companies and detected the GM result of them. Mission Tortilla Chips was one of the products that yielded a positive GM result (gen-mod research website).

The corn used as an ingredient in these chips is provided by GRUMA, a Mexican food company that claims to be the worldwide leader in corn flour and tortilla production. GRUMA doesn’t try to hide that it has been producing processed corn flour since 1949, and the research done in the study shows that the corn that comes from here is definitely genetically modified.
