The food product I chose is Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

In their official ingredients list there is no mention of any gene modified corn, but when I searched just a little more, I found that the corn in their corn flakes is gene modified corn made by a company called Monsanto. And not only is Kellogg’s using this modified corn, but there are estimates that up to 85% off all corn based cereal is containing this modified corn from Monsanto. This gene modified corn (NK603) is linked to cancer tumors in rats.

Fruity Cheerios

Fruity Cheerios is a serial produced by Mills. It contains canola oil. In the 70´s Canadians bred a new variety of a plant called «rapeseed». The reason why they had to temper with it was because the plant was know to be toxic. Using genetic modification scientists removed the «bad» parts from the plant and gave it a new name; Canola oil. The plant has been genetically modified since 1998 and «canola oil» is known to be one of the many ingredients in Cheerios products.

The genetically modified version of rapeseed is referred to as «Rapeseed 00».
Monsanto is a company that genetically modifies corn, soybean, cottons and vegetables etc.
They produce canola oil for Cheerios.

Waiter, There’s a Gene in my Soup!

General Mills, along with many other large manufactures such as kraft, have been known to use products from genetically modified products. Gerneral mills is one of the largest cereal producers, and  has been using corn that has been genetically engineered and modified. It is believed up to 85% of all corn found in products in grocery stores contain these GMO's, Monsanto being a large chunk of that. Until today, and with the recent elections, these modified products do not need to be labeled on food products on the shelves in stores under the FDA.

It’s no secret that corn is one of the foods at the top of the GMO chain. One of the foods I consume that has genetically modified materials can be found in corn tortilla chips, specifically “Mission Tortilla Chips”. Mission corn tortilla chips and other corn products claim to be “all natural”, made with 100% whole grain corn (Mission food service website). Now, it isn’t incorrect to say this, since technically the corn is 100% whole grain that goes into the chips. However, what is done to this corn prior to becoming chips is the real story.

A study done on genetically modified organic corn products compared various corn products from different companies and detected the GM result of them. Mission Tortilla Chips was one of the products that yielded a positive GM result (gen-mod research website).

The corn used as an ingredient in these chips is provided by GRUMA, a Mexican food company that claims to be the worldwide leader in corn flour and tortilla production. GRUMA doesn’t try to hide that it has been producing processed corn flour since 1949, and the research done in the study shows that the corn that comes from here is definitely genetically modified.
